Segerstrom vs. JW North (L 30–36)

September 27-Jaguar Stadium

The Jaguars got back to business Thursday defending their home field with a 27-21 victory over the visiting JW North Huskies. Going into the game, Segerstrom was down four starters, two of which play both sides of the ball. This did not stop the Jaguars from coming out firing on all cylinders. The Huskies brought pressure from the beginning to the final whistle. In the hard fought battle, the Jaguars showed their resiliency and ability to overcome adversity after JW North opened the game with a touchdown drive. In the ensuing drive, Segerstrom implemented the no-huddle offense to perfection taking the ball down the field for the tying touchdown.

As the game continued more players felt the effects of running a no-huddle offense. JW North was forced to substitute players frequently keeping their starters off the field. Brian Diaz ran hard behind an offensive line that allowed Diaz to run wild in the secondary. Ivan Brooks and Joseph Sanchez added to the ground attack.

Unfortunately, the Jaguars also felt the effects of the no-huddle offense having several players suffering from cramps, forcing Segerstrom back to its traditional offense.

With the offense trying to maintain its moment, it was the defense who continued to make the plays. On several occasions, the Jaguar secondary was tested by the Huskies’ spread offense, but rose to the challenge. Defensive ends, Kenari Drayton, Brian Alvarez, Michael Nieves, and Chris Nieto all were faced with keeping Huskies quarterback in the pocket. As the game went on, Drayton and Nieves had key stops forcing Huskies’ punts. With a little over four minutes left in the fourth quarter in a tied ball game, Jorge Cantoran made his presence felt. Cantoran intercepted Huskies’ pass taking it 30 yards for a touchdown giving the Jaguars the lead. It would be the defense again who would take the field with the game on the line after a missed extra point. As the Huskies drove inside the red zone, the Segerstrom defense stepped up and sealed the victory with Kenari Drayton recovering a fumble with just under a minute left to play.

Segerstrom vs. Bassett (W 40–6)

October 20-Jaguar Stadium

The Jaguars hosted the visiting Bassett Olympians Saturday morning in a non-league game. Segerstrom established its dominance early in the game and rode the early momentum to a 40-6 victory. The offense was led by the three head-monster in Joseph Sanchez, Ivan Brooks, and Jorge Cantoran. Together the three combined to breakdown the Olympian defense attacking both between and off tackle. With the urgency of the no-huddle offense, the Jaguars built a 40-0 lead at half time.

In the second half, the defense continued to fly around disrupting Bassett’s offensive output. Maury Soberanis and Mateo Lopez routinely pressured the Olympians’ quarterback forcing errant passes. The Jaguar secondary was led by Gavin Juan and Edgar Paredes who shut down the Bassett receivers. Kevin Cruz added to the pressure sacking the Olympian quarterback and recovering a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. The Jaguars look to build on this momentum going into next week when they face another non-league opponent in the Anaheim Colonists.
