Segerstrom vs. Westminster (L 34–35)

In the final game of the season, the Segerstrom Jaguars battled the host Westminster Lions for four quarters. With the momentum shifting back and forth throughout the league championship game, the Jaguars fought hard, but unfortunately came up just short losing 34-35.
The first half was characterized by big plays. Edgar Paredes intercepted the ball in the end zone putting an end to the Lions’ opening drive. As the Jaguar offense took the field, nerves of the championship game got the best of them. Two of the first three plays were penalties, which put an end to the Segerstrom opening drive. Westminster responded by driving the length of the field to take a 6 point lead after they missed the PAT. Now settled, the Jaguars responded with their typical no-huddle offense taking a 7-6 lead. Two more touchdowns were added to give the Jaguars a 9 point lead at the half.
The second half saw the momentum swing several times. As the Jaguars led 21-12, Danny Gonzalez was called for pass interference giving the Lions a first down. On the ensuing play Gonzalez intercepted the ball and raced up field giving the Jaguars great field position. The Segerstrom offense capitalized with a 50 yard scoring drive capped off by a Joseph Sanchez touchdown run. Westminster did not quit and responded with their own touchdown drive bringing the score 28-20 with a successful two point conversion. After a stalled Segerstrom offensive series because of penalties, the Westminster offense drove the length of the field and tied the game 28-28. The Jaguars returned the favor with two big runs by Ivan Brooks and Brian Diaz to go up 34-38 after a penalized PAT attempt was no good.
With three minutes left in the game, the Lions offense drove down and scored to even the score 34-34. On their PAT attempt the Jaguar defense got good pressure, but the kick was good. Down 34-35 with under a minute to play the Jaguars started their drive at the 35 yard line with 36 seconds left in the game after the Westminster kick sailed out of bounds. The first play was a naked boot called by Joseph Moran, who took the ball around the defense for a big 20 yard gain. Ivan Brooks and Brian Diaz did the rest getting the ball inside the 20 with 6 seconds left. As the Jaguars lined up to kick the potential game winning field goal, a time out was called. The Jaguars received instructions and lined up for the kick. Snap and hold were good, but the kick hooked left just missing the left up-right. The 2012 season came to an end in dramatic fashion, but the Jaguars FOUGHT hard to overcome adversity all year and should be PROUD of everything they accomplished.
Week 10: Westminster The last game of the season saw the Jaguars hosting the Lions of Westminster High School. The Lions would score first from a drive that took most of the first quarter and ended with a field goal to lead 3-0. On the ensuing JaguarsÕ drive, the Lions would picked off a pass and returned it for a TD. With the good PAT, the Lions were up 10-0 early into the second quarter. However, the Jaguars would not go quietly, scoring late in the second quarter to cut the lead to 10-6. The score remains 10-6 going into the half. After the half, the Jaguars defense would step up to shut down the LionÕs offense. Not to be out played, the JaguarÕs offense came to life, scoring 2 times before the Lions would answer. However, on there next drive, the Jaguars would put the game away with another TD to make the score 30-16 in favor of the Jaguars. With this win, the Jaguars ended the season 7-3, 3-2 in league and secure a share of the Goldenwest League Championship.
