Game 4 vs. Godinez

In what has become an exciting rivalry in its short existence, Segerstrom reigned supreme for the third consecutive season as we defeated crosstown rival Godinez, 55-12, in a nonleague game Friday night. As the gates opened at 5:30 the student body starts to roll in to the stadium as we prepared to take on the Grizzlies. The energy was in the air as parents and fans tailgated outside and prepared themselves for this Rivalry game.  

The Jaguars (4-0) raced out to an early lead behind senior running back David Perkins, who finished the game with 204 yards on 15 carries and five touchdowns. The Defense was also was stout as the played hard and fired up to stop Godinez’s vaunted running attack.  The Jaguars ground attack was in full force, gaining 305 yards on 45 carries, with 88 of those yards coming from Sonny Roa on only six carries. Eric Parga contributed 89 yards on four carries. Raymond Avalos finished 8 of 10 passing for 146 yards and one touchdown. The defense once again held our opponents under 7 points, with one Godinez score coming on a kickoff return. Next up for the Jags was Woodbridge...which was our biggest task to date....but we were out to make HISTORY.....Jag football.....

JV vs. Godinez (W 34–20)

The Jaguars road opener came against city rivals, the Godinez Grizzlies. In one of the most anticipated match-ups of the season, the Jaguars handed the Grizzlies a crushing defeat 34-20. Segerstrom was led this week by its special teams. Brian Diaz returned two punts for touchdowns with the help of some great blocking by Nik Kloumis who drove a-would be tackler 20 yards to the sideline. Because of the threat on punt return, the Jaguars offense was the recipients of great field position all game.

Defensively, the Jaguars continued their dominance shutting out the Grizzlies in the first half. Great physical play up front by the Segerstrom defensive line was anchored by Brandon Rodriguez and Kevin Cruz. Cruz recorded his first sack of the season forcing another Godinez punt while Rodriguez shut down the inside run. Michael Nieves and Kenari Drayton added pressure to the Godinez ground attack tackling the dive and quarterback all game.

On the offensive side of the ball, Tyler Tafoya completed two big passes to Joseph Sanchez that helped slow the Grizzlies’ defensive scheme. Joseph Sanchez rushed for one touchdown and caught another to lead the Jaguars’ attack. In his first game back from breaking his hand, Ponpeyo Flores added another touchdown taking a hand-off from Joseph Sanchez on a criss-cross. The Jaguars look to continue their success next week as they take on the Woodbridge Warriors.

Freshmen: Godinez
Week 3: Godinez This week, the Jaguars takes on their rival from down the street in the form of the Godinez Grizzlies. The freshmen football program has lost the first 2 meeting and are looking to stop that trend. The offense would take the opening drive and consumed most of the first quarter but end up short of scoring and to turn the ball over on downs. ThatÕs where the defense took over, stopping the Grizzlies on everyone of their drives. The first score on the board would be a 5 yard rush from running back Zamani Nunez, which, in the second half, would add a 80 yards run and 2 INT. The scoring would continue for the Jaguars late in the 2nd quarter with a 20 yards TD pass from quarterback Abraham Guerrero to receiver Alias Garcia. The two point try would fail so the Jaguars are up 12-0. On the ensuing kickoff, the Jaguars would recover an onside kick to set them up at the 40 yard line. The Jaguars would score on there first play with a pass from quarterback Justin Nip to receiver Elias Garcia for his second TD catch, this one of 40 yards. With the fail 2 point try, the Jaguars would go into the half leading 18-0. In the second half, the defense held strong, producing multiple sacks and 3 INT, one of which was returned by linebacker Chris Ferman for a touchdown. The Jaguars offense would add one more TD with a run of 30 yards from running back George Ortega. The final score of the day would be a 96 yards punt return from Jeremiah Dunn to close the game at 44-0. With this victory, the Jaguars are 3-1 and will be hosting the Woodbridge Warriors next week to close out there pre-season.
